And we heard nothing while the world changed

Sofware I wouldnt do without: Total Commander

This has to be the tool i have owned the longest and still use (second to this would be Stardock Object Desktop, the third maybe slickedit).

And it is one of the first things I install if I reinstall my computer. This is a “Commander” style of file manager, and the best I have used. It’s not the prettiest, but it is fast to use.

Out of the box it can already do a lot:
compare, synchronise, deal with archives, rename files, deal with remote ftp files (with access to compare, synchronise etc), search files even by content, encode/decode for mail, calculate space used, manage network files, multiple folders tab interface, instant preview window, hotlist of folders, custom menus for tools/launch. It has neat touches like the ability to see all the files in a tree in one window, if you are not sure where your file is… It can also create file lists and directory trees (printable, very useful)

As a matter of fact there’s probably still many things I am not aware of.

It manages to do all that and still have an interface which is clear and simple to use.

It also supports extensions and over the year dozens and dozens have been added. With these extensions you can do anything: access or view many formats, integrate with music players, editors and even instant messengers, access remote servers via scp, manage your bookmarks, manage the registry, store events and reminders, check pop mail, open ISO images , act as a windows task manager, browse and search the registry, access linux drives on the machine, manage services, browse the web etc.

And I registered it 10 years ago and have had free upgrades ever since. It feels almost unfair to the author smile

Now I am aware file managers are very personal, some people like very different styles, and i have happily used others when necessary. But this was one of the first sharewares I purchased and it is still extremely good.
