Sites I registered at but ended up not using… (updated)
One thing I must say though is that I have signed up on a lot of those slick looking social websites and barely used their functions - usually the site is too superficial, too complicated, or the content and community is not compelling enough to make me participate. Just didn’t suit me. Still, these are good sites which might suit someone with a different personality:
zoho - used for… 2-3 times - http://zoho.com - awesome online applications but i just don’t seem to end up using them. Just like a dozen online pims, planners etc. before them. The zoho notebook app looks awesone though, will try it once it’s available.
Hiveminder - used for… 1 month or so? - http://hiveminder.com - a nice todo manager with a few clever ideas, similar in this to stikkit and sandy. But alas no such site has managed to be useful enough for me to stick with it over paper or desktop solutions. I dont know why.
blink list - used for… 1 month or so? - http://www.blinklist.com/ - one of those bookmarking sites but for some reason I actually used that - imported my old bookmarks and added some new ones. (not as nice as a “snapshot” system but none of those seem to work with opera although I have some hopes for plumb, which is in development). http://www.blinklist.com/zenaide/
wordie - used for… 1 month or so? - i’m at http://wordie.org/people/azzurre - word collecting. Pointless but fun and poetic. Havent gone back in ages, might just go back now and then for the poetic aspect
stikkit.com - used for over a month - sticky notes with a difference: a smart engine that analyses the content of the notes and automatically generates todo items, events, contact details etc. Brilliant. Also works via email and even instant messenging thanks to imified. Just read the following blog entry to get an idea http://www.43folders.com/2007/02/07/stikkit-introduction/ I almost used it for a while, then it fell on the wayside
mystrands.com & partystrands - registered and never started using it. Same for the other music social networking sites.
Book crossing http://bookcrossing.com/ - that has got to be the neatest idea, set your books free (leave them in a cafe or bus or anywhere with a sticker and a tracking code) and track their path. I liked the idea, but never got around to doing anything
backflip.com and notefish.com - snipping / page snapshot. Only seem to work from 1-2- browsers and i end up having to start another browser to save stuff since the browsers I normally use (kmeleon and opera) are not supported. Great ideas behind those type of sites though, as not only do they keep a link/summary but they keep a copy of the page or part of the page which you want to save. Too bad none works now that I changed to Opera
gather.com - quite interesting community, for however long it lasts before posturing wins. About posting your opinion. Just doesn’t seem to pull me in. And i cant get rid of all the emails it sends :(
newsvine.com - used once or twice - good quality news site so far probably helped by their deals with real news sources. But I seem to check it maybe once a week and all I have ever participated is a comment…
wordpress.com - used once or twice - i keep meaning to put some content there that i don’t really want to squeeze in on this blog, but i never get around to it. The best of the hosted blogs i have found, especially considering their T&Cs are open and good.
vox.com - used once or twice - tried for the same reason as wordpress, and the second best I have found. still, not using it any more than wordpress. Ended up cancelling it. Although it does look nice and has reasonable T&Cs.
shelfari.com - used once or twice - book social networking. just makes it too slow to add books, and the content i see seems quite superficial. I ended up using the less “shiny” librarything cause it’s quick and simple to use and the user base is good. Looks prettier though.
explode - http://explode.elgg.org - still not sure what it’s all about
imdb - use once or twice every few months - http://www.imdb.org - just trying to get all the DVDs I watch/rent tracked in there for myself. Not sure if I’ll continue, it’s quite time consuming and at the moment the site doesn’t do much with the information. But i do have several hundred films categorized as seen, owned etc. and a short to view and to rent list.
